LED-Based System Brings Lighting Energy Cost to 3.5¢ Per Square Foot – 90% Less Than Traditional Sources

Boston, Mass., December 16, 2010Digital Lumens today announced that United States Cold Storage, Inc. (USCS), one of the country’s leading refrigerated storage and logistics companies, has selected and deployed the Digital Lumens Intelligent Lighting System in the Hazleton, PA facility.   Located 79 miles southwest of New York, Hazleton is an emerging distribution hub for the logistics industry in the Northeast.

Installed in the recently built, 88,000-square-foot addition, the new lighting system costs 3.5¢ per square foot per year to operate, compared to 46¢ per square foot for traditional alternatives.  With its low kWh consumption, the Digital Lumens system generates 93% less CO2 than traditional systems, and the LightRules lighting management software provides detailed operational reports on daily kWh usage and facility occupancy patterns.

“We aggressively pursue energy efficiency opportunities across all aspects of our operations as we strive to meet ambitious company-wide goals for reduced energy usage per cubic foot,” said Michael Lynch, Director of Engineering of United States Cold Storage.  “When reviewing the options for energy efficient lighting, we were drawn to the savings provided by the Digital Lumens system as well as its design.  The rugged, industrial-quality LED fixtures are ideal for our demanding environments, while the LightRules management software provides key data that we can share across the organization.”

“We are very pleased that USCS has selected our Intelligent Lighting System for this new addition to their facility,” said Tom Pincince, President and CEO of Digital Lumens.  “The USCS team’s strong commitment to operational excellence and sustainability, combined with a deep understanding of every decision’s impact on their carbon footprint, make them very sophisticated lighting customers.  We look forward to working with them to ensure their ongoing success with their new system.”

USCS worked with Groom Energy Systems, an energy efficiency consulting firm and Digital Lumens reseller, on the project, and expects a return on investment of 14.6 months.   PPL, the local utility, provided the project incentive.
