Employees Logged Nearly 1,000 Bicycling Commuter Miles During Week-Long Challenge, One Awarded “Fearless Commuter”

Boston, Mass., June 5, 2013 – Digital Lumens, the leader in intelligent lighting systems, today announced it was recognized as a leader in the MassCommute Bicycle Challenge, an annual week-long competition that empowers local commuters to bike to work. Part of Bay State Bike Week, the challenge encouraged employees to forgo normal commuting routines and instead cycle to work during the week of May 11-19 in an attempt to promote cycling as an efficient, convenient and healthy alternative to other forms of transportation.

According to the League of American Bicyclists, Massachusetts is one of the most bicycle- friendly states, and is the only state in the nation that celebrates a dedicated bike week. During the week-long challenge, 22 Digital Lumens employees participated in the event and logged 945 miles. Overall, the team placed third in the corporate category of companies with 25-99 employees.

In addition to the team honor, John Wiedey, a senior software engineer at Digital Lumens, was awarded the Fearless Commuter Award for his dedication to cycling to and from work. Wiedey bikes from his home in Bedford to the Digital Lumens office and back each day, which adds up to around 8,500 miles annually. He also promotes fitness among his co-workers by encouraging exercise, and riding alongside inexperienced bikers in corporate-sponsored events.

“Biking is a passion that is shared by many in the Digital Lumens family, and I’m so proud of the achievements of our team in this year’s challenge,” said Tom Pincince, President and CEO of Digital Lumens, and avid cyclist. “As a business, we strive to help organizations reduce their carbon footprint by offering LED lighting solutions, so it’s no surprise that our employees are helping reduce emissions in their own way – by choosing to bike to work instead of taking other forms of transportation.”

The winners were announced at yesterday’s Bike Bash, held at Harvard University’s Queens Head Pub. To learn more about the MassCommute Bicycle Challenge, please visit their website.
