Joins OpenADR Alliance To Support Interoperability Between Smart Buildings and Smart Grid

Boston, Mass., May 16, 2011Digital Lumens, the leader in intelligent lighting systems, today announced that the Company will extend its support for Demand Response from manual to automated response.  Digital Lumens has also joined the OpenADR Alliance, which includes industry stakeholders committed to fostering support for the standard demand-response communication protocol specifications published by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, as well as Smart Grid-related standards emerging from OASIS, UCA and NAESB.

“Many of our customers already participate in demand-response programs and are manually switching to ‘demand-response’ profiles in the Digital Lumens LightRules lighting management software,” said Brian Chemel, Chief Technology Officer of Digital Lumens.  “Adding OpenADR support to our Intelligent Lighting System will streamline the process and enable the demand-response system to automatically invoke the proper lighting profile to ensure compliance.  This is the first of many integrations with LightRules that will extend capabilities into the systems that our customers use to manage their buildings, operations, and energy use. ”

“The OpenADR standard will transform the way buildings are designed and managed by driving new energy efficiency initiatives,” said Barry Haaser, Managing Director, OpenADR Alliance. “While many organizations are focused on Building Management Systems, lighting controls and intelligent systems such as those offered by Digital Lumens can substantially reduce energy consumption during an Automated Demand Response event.”

“Broad adoption of OpenADR improves scalability of demand-response programs and enhances customer participation options, which is a win for all market stakeholders,” said Gregg Dixon, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sales of EnerNOC.  “With lighting representing a major portion of any building’s energy load, having intelligent lighting systems support OpenADR will increase the overall potential of demand response.”

“Technology-enabled Demand Response options give end-users better insight into energy use and curtailment options, and empower energy retailers to directly engage customers,” said Josh Gould, Director, Research and Advisory, Cleantech Group. “Companies like Digital Lumens who are delivering solutions that capture information on electrical lighting usage for large facilities are welcome additions to the Demand Response initiatives.”

About the OpenADR Alliance

OpenADR Alliance is fostering the development, adoption, and compliance of the Open Automated Demand Response (OpenADR) standard through collaboration, education, training, testing, and certification. The OpenADR Alliance intends to work with related organizations such as the Smart Grid Interoperability Panel, Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS), North American Energy Standards Board (NAESB), Utilities Communications Architecture International User’s Group (UCAIug), Wi-Fi AllianceTM, ZigBee AllianceTM and others as appropriate.

The OpenADR Alliance is open to all interested stakeholders sharing a common interest in facilitating and accelerating the use and adoption of the OpenADR standard for price- and reliability-based demand response. More information can be obtained at
