…pretty soon you’re talking about real energy savings.
It’s Earth Day 2010, and also my first Digital Lumens blog post. I’m thrilled to join Digital Lumens because I see the opportunity to make a big impact on energy usage in lighting. And, that has big implications for our all of us.
There are lots of reasons to save energy – it saves money, it reduces our reliance on non-renewable and often imported or environmentally unfriendly sources of energy, and it decreases the need to build more power generation capacity. These are very capital-intensive projects that also can be complicated for permitting and zoning. If we can lower our energy usage without giving up functionality, it’s a win-win-win for all of us.
The vast complexity of really changing our energy usage can be overwhelming. It’s such a big problem that we often can’t get our arms around how to start. Let’s look at the impact of just changing commercial lighting.
Digital Lumens’s first product is designed for a 1:1 replacement of typical commercial light fixtures found in warehouse and manufacturing space. And, compared to existing fixtures, we deliver up to 90% energy savings. That’s a lot, but how does it add up?
A typical 250,000 square foot warehouse spends $250,000 a year on lighting energy costs. With products like ours installed, that can be reduced to $25,000. More importantly, that $225,000 savings translates to 882 tons of CO2, or the equivalent to powering 139 US homes for a year. And, with the total North American market of 11 billion square feet of warehouse and manufacturing space, there is the potential to save almost 25.7 million tons of CO2 and to free up enough electricity to power 6.1 million homes. That’s the population of LA and Houston combined!
So, start taking those first steps. Before you know it, you’ll be covering a lot of ground. And, saving a lot of money. Happy Earth Day!
